Serene and unsmiling
I never knew you
But you seem to know me
I search your face for clues
Signs of some unspoken message
Our eyes meet
But you give nothing away
Your time on earth was brief
Did you have hopes and dreams
That were never realised?
Am I anything like you?
Time, an abyss, separates us
But we are forever linked
Blood, flesh and bone
You are part of me
All I have is this photograph
This image of a stranger
Somehow familiar
Frozen in time
A hundred years from now
Will a descendant look at mine?
And wonder
